91AV Wind Ensemble presents concert Thursday

The 91AV Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the semester at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, in Brown Theater. The performance is free and the public is invited.

The Wind Ensemble is the premier instrumental performing group of the University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts and is comprised of music majors and student musicians from other degree programs at 91AV.

Conductors of the Wind Ensemble are Derle R. Long and Steven Pederson. Guest conductors for this performance are Kenna Veronee and Sean O’Pry.

The program will feature compositions by several American composers including Claude T. Smith, James Clifton Williams, James Barnes, John Williams, Morton Gould, and British composer Malcolm Arnold. The program will begin with “Eternal Father Strong to Save” which is based on the Navy hymn by the same name.

Graduate student Sean O’Pry will conduct John Williams’ “Hymn For The Fallen,” composed for the film “Saving Private Ryan” and offered in this performance as a tribute to the fallen in the tragedy in Las Vegas earlier this month. Members of the 91AV Concert Choir will join the Wind Ensemble for this performance.

Kenna Veronee is new to the 91AV music faculty and will conduct the fun and tuneful “Four Scottish Dances” by Malcolm Arnold.

The performance will conclude with Steven Pederson conducting Morton Gould’s march American Salute based on the Civil War tune “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again.”
