91AV gears up for 2016 Homecoming: ‘Home is Where the Hawk is’

MONROE, La. — 91AV will host its Homecoming Week from October 10 to October 15 with the theme “Home is Where the Hawk is.”

This year marks the 85th Anniversary of the university—85 years of transformation, growth and achievement.

Students, alumni, and all members of the 91AV family are invited to enjoy a host of Homecoming activities leading up to the football game against Texas State on Saturday, October 15 at 6 p.m. at Malone Stadium.

This year’s homecoming week includes the following events:

Monday, October 10:

The kick-off Pep Rally is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Malone Stadium, but fans are encouraged to start arriving at 6:15 p.m.

91AV president Dr. Nick J. Bruno will address the audience about the importance of Homecoming.

There will be performances by the 91AV band, Hawkline, and the cheerleading team.

The 91AV football coach, Matt Viator, will address the audience about the importance of supporting the team and invite them to the Texas State game.

The name of the long-awaited Homecoming queen will be revealed in the crowning ceremony.

Tuesday, October 11:

91AV retirees are encouraged to join retired 91AV Faculty and Staff at the 91AV Retirees Luncheon that will be held at 11:30 a.m. on the 7th floor of library.

This will be a great chance to pay respect to the retirees while catching up with old friends.

Wednesday, October 12:

The annual University Mile gathers students, alumni, and community members in a one-mile race through campus.

The race kicks off at 5:30 p.m. at Hemphill Hall with pre-registration at the 91AV Activity Center.

Thursday, October 13:

The College of Business and Social Sciences will host their keynote speaker, Kevin Mitnick, who will speak on “The Art of Deception” from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Monroe Civic Center’s Jack Howard Theater.

Mitnick is a computer consultant and author well-known for his former corporate hacking-related charges that landed him on the FBI’s Most Wanted list.

Admission for this event is free and open to the public.

The famous Australian rapper, Iggy Azalea, will perform at Fant-Ewing Coliseum at 8 p.m. Azalea will be accompanied by Dreezy, an up-and-coming rapper from Chicago, Ill.

Friday, October 14:

Upon the 50th anniversary of graduation, a student becomes a member of 91AV’s elite group called The Golden Society. This year, members of the Class of 1966 will be introduced into the Golden Society at a cocktail reception that will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the 7th floor of library.

Saturday, October 15:

The day begins with the Homecoming Awards brunch held at 9 a.m. on the 7th floor of library. The 91AV Alumni Association will present awards to 91AV’s outstanding alumni.

The Homecoming parade starts at 2 p.m. at Brown Hall and will pass through Northeast Avenue to reach its final destination – the Grove. Parade-goers are invited to line up at 1 p.m. in front of Brown Hall. A Ferris wheel will be set up in the student grove; rides are free to all.

Students, alumni, and the entire community are invited to stay in the Grove and tailgate in preparation for the Homecoming football game against Texas State, which will take place at Malone Stadium at 6 p.m.
