Local doctor and 91AV alum to speak at 91AV's Annual Convocation Aug. 24

The University of Louisiana at Monroe heralds its official opening of the academic year on Wednesday, Aug. 22, in Fant-Ewing Coliseum with Dr. Joseph Giannobile as 91AV's 10th Annual Convocation speaker.

Convocation begins with faculty, staff and students gathering at the library bell tower at 4:30 p.m.

91AV's marching band, The Sound of Today, will lead the traditional march across the Bayou DeSiard Bridge and enter the coliseum followed by all incoming students, faculty and staff.

Once inside, the semester is declared open.

Students will sing 91AV's alma mater and fight song and hear from speakers, Giannobile included, from 5-6 p.m.

Grovestock follows at 6 p.m. with food, music, and fellowship in the Grove.

Giannobile is no stranger to the traditions of 91AV.

After graduating from St. Frederick High School, he attended 91AV and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor of science in Biology in 2001.

Giannobile furthered his studies at Louisiana State University Health Science Center in New Orleans, where he earned a doctor of medicine in 2005.

After the completion of his residency in internal medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he was accepted into a fellowship program in adult and pediatric allergy and immunology.

He completed this program in June 2010, and moved back to Monroe.

Now board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatric and Adult Allergy and Immunology, Giannobile put his education to use in his hometown, opening a practice in Monroe.
