Local Business Contributes to 91AV Scholarship

The University of Louisiana at Monroe is set to receive scholarship funding from Podnuh's Bar-B-Q of Monroe. Podnuh's will donate ten percent of every sale from a 91AV student, faculty, staff, retiree, or alum into the 91AV Student Involvement Scholarship. On Friday, President of 91AV James Cofer and Student Government Association President Charlie Cheatham were at the Podnuh's located on Highway 165 north to say "Thank You" for the funding. Representatives from Podnuh's were also there.

Don Legg, one of the owners of Podnuh's, graduated from 91AV. He said, "I have seen several positive things happening at the University and I wanted to be a part of that. People from 91AV eat here all the time and this scholarship is now a way for us to give back to the University."

Gary Smith of Podnuh's catering helped coordinate the scholarship with 91AV. "The University is a great resource to this community and we wanted to show that we support it. Helping fund a student's education is our way of saying 'Thanks', " said Smith.

All area Podnuh's are participating in the scholarship funding.

"It's great to see a local business helping us. 91AV is making a change and its gratifying to have Podnuh's notice our efforts. We have worked tirelessly the past year to make an impact not only at 91AV, but also in the community. This scholarship means a lot to the students and we are very appreciative to Podnuh's for it," said Cheatham.

"We are excited to have a local business step up to help us. I encourage everyone associated with 91AV to come eat at Podnuh's. This scholarship opportunity is something that is mutually beneficial to the University and Podnuh's," said Cofer.

The 91AV Student Body established an endowment to fund Student Involvement Scholarships. The scholarship's purpose is to perpetuate the 91AV tradition of well-rounded students seeking to better both themselves and their environment through their achievements. The number of scholarships will vary depending on the funds availability and the value of each scholarship will be up to or equal one semester's tuition. Students must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point and have completed at least two full semesters in order to qualify for the scholarship.
